Listen to music by Mexico City-based Guatemalan cellist Mabe Fratti, whose latest release, Sentir que no sabes, veers in and out of avant-pop soundscapes with horns, drums, keyboards, electronics, and her fearless and perhaps feathery voice. The results are wholly original and packed full of riffs, textures, and hard-to-identify sounds for an unpredictable journey of the most memorable kind.
There’s also new music from Tuareg guitar group Etran De L'Aïr; new work with electronics from Japanese marimba player Masayoshi Fujita; and a work by Tristan Perich for 3 vibraphones and 20-channel 1-bit electronics, performed by the dynamic French group, Ensemble 0.
Then hear a selection from the new album by Chinese pipa master Gao Hong together with London-based Argentinian guitarist and music producer Ignacio Lusardi Monteverde. Listen also to psychedelic Latin chanson music from Combo Daguerre, a group led by Olivier Conan, founder of the psychedelic cumbia band Chicha Libre, the band’s hybrid style is “informed by boleros, cumbia, 60's rock, French chanson, Gainsbourg and 1930s surrealism” (Bandcamp). Plus, the Neil Cowley Trio returns after a hiatus with a single “Adam Alphabet” from their new record, due in September. And more. - Caryn Havlik
