#4930, New Releases, September 2024

New Sounds | Sep 30, 2024

It’s the most wonderful time of the month. Hear Afrofuturist folklore from multi-instrumentalist and scholar Jake Blount and bassist/composer Mali Obomsawin, percussive-based reveries from Philly-based drummer/producer/filmmaker Evan Chapman, and new music by German keyboardist/composer Max Richter.

From folk banjo player, fiddler, singer, and scholar Jake Blount, and bass player, songwriter, and composer Mali Obomsawin, hear electro-acoustic Indigenous and Afrofuturist folklore combining instruments, songs, teachings, and oratory from different traditions. It’s from their new album symbiont, which may touch on shape-note hymns, spirituals, Caribbean banjo tunes from the late 17th century, screaming electric guitars, sequenced beats and synthesized drones. Hear some of the songs from this 2024 record.

Then, there’s new music from German composer Max Richter, which pairs electronics with acoustic instruments and field recordings, the natural world with the human world, from a suite of songs that looks back to move forward. Also, hear lyrical and multilayered electro-acoustic music from Philly-based drummer/producer/filmmaker Evan Chapman. Plus, new music by Australian-born, California-based bass player/composer Anna Butterss, Franco-Algerian cellist Nesrine, and the late Scottish producer SOPHIE. - Caryn Havlik
