Hear a mix of minimalism, ambient music whether acoustic or electronic, and perhaps elements of post-rock music, sometimes called “post-classical” or “neo-classical” from Swedish composer Per Störby Jutbring, German composer and pianist Max Richter, and Polish pianist and composer Hania Rani.
From the Swedish composer, pianist and artist Per Störby Jutbring, listen to a piece “combining Western classical music with the high energy of post punk and pulse-based minimalism”. It was composed for the Swedish Malva Quartet and adds the composer’s own “choppy piano” (Facebook). It’s from the brand-new album, Tenants Of Misty Mansion (According To The Landlord). Also, listen to piano-based work with electronics by Polish pianist and composer Hania Rani from her 2023 album, Ghosts, which explores themes of life, death, memory, and loss.
Then, there’s new music from German composer Max Richter, which pairs occasional electronics and field recordings – the sounds of contemporary urban life and the natural world with strings and piano. Also, hear music by the late Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson for the combination of electronics, field recordings and a full orchestra. His symphony with electronics and field recordings made at Iceland’s Elliðaár power plant, A Prayer to the Dynamo, was written in response to a commission from the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and was a work that Jóhannsson was able to have written freely, without the narrative constraints of scoring a film.
Plus, hear English minimalist composer Michael Nyman’s music for the films of Peter Greenaway –and some of his score for Drowning By Numbers built around a Mozart Sinfonia Concertante. - Caryn Havlik
