#4953, New Sounds Live: Seth Parker Woods, in the Greene Space

New Sounds | Dec 3, 2024

Singer, pianist, and composer Julius Eastman was a familiar figure on the so-called downtown music scene in New York in the 1970s. Much of Eastman’s music was thought to be lost after his death in 1990, but in recent years, Eastman’s music has come roaring back. Cellist Seth Parker Woods is one of the musicians championing the work of the late composer. From the New Sounds Live concerts, cellist Seth Parker Woods performs Eastman’s work, “The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” for ten cellos. The work is “Eastman’s tribute to the medieval heroine who somewhat paradoxically has become both the personification of fiery religious conviction and a retrospective queer icon” and the inclusion on the recording “owes itself to the dedicated scholarship of Clarice Jensen but also to Seth Parker Woods’ herculean ambition” (Bandcamp liner notes). Recorded in The Greene Space in October of 2024, hear the “sense of Punkness and of love” that Seth Parker Woods brings to the piece. Also on the program, recorded in The Greene Space, Seth Parker Woods plays Monty Adkins’s “Winter Tendrils,” and Nathalie Joachim’s “Dam Mwen Yo” and-  as he does on the newly released album from the collective Wild Up, Eastman: The Holy Presence- Woods performs Julius Eastman’s “The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc” for ten cellos, playing live alongside nine recordings of himself.
