The biggest federal death penalty case in America’s history opened last week in Santa Ana, California. The murder and racketeering case is aimed at bringing down the Aryan Brotherhood, a notoriously violent prison gang. On this week’s Underreported, John McDonald of the Orange County Register and David Grann, who wrote the profile “The Brand” for the New Yorker in 2004, fill us in on the trial, and the gang’s 30-year history.
