Listen to an improvised duet from guitarist Lee Ranaldo with ambient zither player Laraaji; plus a collaborative performance by Medicine Singers with Lee Ranaldo, Yonatan Gat and his trio, all recorded live at the 25th Annual New York Guitar Festival, a co-presentation with the World Music Institute and Kaufman Center.
Hear duo music by Lee Ranaldo and Laraaji, from the New York Guitar Festival, recorded in June of 2024. Lee Ranaldo is best known as a co-founder of the band Sonic Youth; his explorations of noise, alternate tunings, and song form have influenced several generations of rock musicians. Laraaji is an ambient zither player, electronic musician, singer, composer. Together, they describe their approach as one of listening carefully to one another in a free association, where one steps into the zone carefully and things happen. Listen to their improvised duet, performed at Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall.
Also, listen to a set from Medicine Singers - the ongoing collaboration between Yonatan Gat, the wildly virtuosic Israeli-born, New York-based guitarist, and the Eastern Medicine Singers, an Eastern Algonquin powwow group from Rhode Island, joined by guitarist Lee Ranaldo. Together they combine ancient trance and spirituality with modern psychedelia, as they perform traditional pow wow songs, Eastern Algonquin pow wow songs, and their take on Link Wray’s “Rumble.” - Caryn Havlik
