Zorn Lives
Spinning on Air | May 18, 2010
Composer, saxophonist, and New York City new-music catalyst John Zorn turned 50 this month. He's celebrating by performing every night during September at the club Tonic, on the lower east side.
Tonight David Garland digs into the Spinning On Air library for some ear-opening, unreleased live Zorn recordings, such as a 1986 duet with guitarist Bill Frisell, the Brooklyn Philharmonic's premier performance of the orchestral piece "For Your Eyes Only," and Zorn's bands Naked City and Locus Solus at the Knitting Factory in 1993. Also, songwriter Robin Holcomb brings a new project, based on the words of environmentalist Rachel Carson, to the Dance Theater Workshop next week. On this show you can can get to know her music, which the New York Times says is "as elegantly simple as a Shaker quilt, and no less beautiful."
