#3010: The Egyptian Influence

New Sounds | May 24, 2010
Recordings by Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour, Cape Verde’s famous diva Cesaria Evora, and Palestinian oud player Simon Shaheen all show the influence of Egyptian music. We’ll hear from them and others on this New Sounds, starting with the great Egyptian singer Om Kalsoum (or Umm Kulthum.) Like the legendary Om Kalsoum, Cesaria Evora is backed by an Egyptian orchestra -a mix of strings with Arabic sounds like the oud, kanun, and ney flute - on her latest release, Nha Sentimento. We’ll also hear from Youssou N’Dour’s release “Egypt,” featuring traditional musicians from Senegal and musicians from Cairo. Plus, the oud player Simon Shaheen, Les Musiciens du Nil, and more.
