The Rough Road for Asians in Pop
Soundcheck | Jun 23, 2010
Pop music in the US is conspicuously short on Asian-American performers, but there’s one place where they are managing to make a splash: YouTube.
That’s how the Filipino-American group Legaci was discovered; their YouTube cover of Justin Bieber’s “Baby” found its way to Bieber’s manager, who asked them to back the teen idol on his current tour. Josh Kun recently wrote about the rise of Legaci for The New York Times; he discusses the tough market for Asians in American pop, and explains how the internet is helping level the playing field.
