NYC to Consolidate IT Infrastructure

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The city is set to shrink its sprawling IT infrastructure. Commissioner Carole Post of the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications says that by consolidating the data systems used by 40-plus agencies, the city can reduce costs and improve services.

Speaking at a data center in downtown Brooklyn, Post said, "We currently have more than 50 data centers like this around the city, some are a bit larger some are smaller, but the idea is to be able to consolidate those into one or more."

Officials say the consolidation will save $100 million in energy, operations, and real-estate costs over the next five years.
