Bloomberg Defends Integrity of School Grades

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Democratic mayoral candidate Bill Thompson is once again taking on Mayor Bloomberg on education. Thompson stood outside Public School 147 yesterday to repeat his position that Bloomberg pressures administrators to change grades and promote students.

The Queens school is under investigation for allegedly inflating grades. Mayor Bloomberg defends his education system, but says he's pretty sure some administrators do attempt to change grades or lie about test scores.

BLOOMBERG: There’s 1500 schools, or thereabouts, I guarantee you there's probably people pushing the limit or even faking it. I suspect it is very small or we would have known about it.

REPORTER: Bloomberg says his administration investigates any instances of suspected misconduct right away. PS 147 declined to comment on the investigation.
