NY Senate to Vote on Mayoral Control Today

The New York State Senate returns to Albany today, to vote on mayoral control of city schools. The special session comes after Senate Democrats struck a deal with Mayor Bloomberg last month on the school control bill, adding four new amendments.
The additions call for a parent training center, an arts education advisory committee, greater oversight for superintendents, and annual public meetings on school safety.
The mayor initially resisted adding those amendments.
The measure is expected to pass the Senate today but will need to head back to the Assembly for a new vote. It's uncertain if that will happen before the new school year begins.
In the meantime, a reconstituted Board of Education is in charge of city schools. The Board chose to keep Chancellor Joel Klein in place.
