NYC Council Votes on Budget Today

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The mayor and city council members have struck a deal on how to close this year's budget gap. A vote is set for today. WNYC's Bob Hennelly has more details.

REPORTER: It is supposed to work like this: the council rescinds a seven-percent property tax cut and the mayor sends out the $400 homeowners rebate check that was part of the budget deal closed last summer. Also in the mix: a small hike in the city's hotel tax and restoration of roughly half the police class staggered from now until July. Some council members say they're apprehensive about reinstating the property tax because it hits middle class New Yorkers while others blame Governor Paterson for cutting city aid and not supporting a income tax hike on the wealthy. For WNYC, I am Bob Hennelly.
