Three Schools Closing for Poor Performance
New York, NY —
Three of the city's public schools are being closed for poor performance.
The city's Education Department says MS 44 on the Upper West Side, PS 90 in the Morrisania section of the Bronx, and PS 225 in Rockaway Park, Queens, all received a D or an F on their annual progress reports. The schools will be phased out gradually, as they stop accepting new classes, and they'll be replaced by new schools.
Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer says the Education Department should have communicated better with parents about the closing of MS 44, because the district is overcrowded and there was talk of moving another school into the building.
The DOE says a meeting will be held next week for parents to discuss their ideas for the new school. The department is expected to announce more school closings next week.
In a statement, Teachers Union President Randi Weingarten says the money it'll take to close the schools down might be better used to improve them.
