Chagall and Artists of the Russian Jewish Theater

It tells the story of the Yiddish theater under Communism. Chagall painted backdrops and studies for costumes for the theater. Organizer Susan Goodman says the exhibition is also about much more.

GOODMAN: You begin to see that theater is a window into Soviet Jewish life and their experiences definitely parallel the situation for the Jews in the country.

REPORTER: Goodman says the Yiddish theater was allowed to flourish under Communism because it was supposedly secular.

But she also says the theater managed to be a subversive cultural force as well.
