Bloomberg Calls for Feds to Boost Infrastructure Improvements

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Mayor Michael Bloomberg says New York and other urban areas will have to curtail short-haul air travel and beef up inter-city train travel. A group of mayors met today to discuss infrastructure needs.

They want the federal government to overhaul the country’s roads, bridges, water systems and mass transit networks. Bloomberg says the U.S. should follow Europe’s lead by eliminating most passenger flights under 500 miles.

BLOOMBERG: High speed rail probably from central city to central city will be able for the foreseeable future to provide you a more reliable and quicker method of transportation than depending on the airplane.

REPORTER: The mayor says New York is already spending more than other cities on large-scale projects that should be funded by the state or federal government – such as the 7 subway line extension and the Third Water Tunnel.

He called on both presidential candidates not just to produce infrastructure plans of their own, but to detail how they would raise money to pay for them.
