Democrats Angling for Fossella's Seat

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Democrats think they have a good chance of winning the seat being vacated by New York City's only Republican congressman, Vito Fossella.

REPORTER: Fossella announced last month he wouldn't seek re-election, following his drunk driving arrest and news that he fathered a child out of wedlock. Staten Island Councilman Mike McMahon is running on behalf of the Democrats:

MCMAHON: They know that I'm a hard working straight shooter who will do the right thing every minute of every day, and I will not create a lot of drama from my personal life.

REPORTER: Republicans are backing Francis H. Powers, a retired Wall Street executive and Fosella's former finance chairman. Powers could not be reached for comment.
