Reactions to Corzine’s Education Plan

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Educators around the Garden State are reviewing Governor Corzine's plan to change the way the state funds public schools.

REPORTER: Under the plan, all districts would receive at least 2% more money from the state next year. And nearly half would see aid increase by at least 10%.

The governor also wants to end the special aid system for New Jersey's 31 underprivileged school districts, known as 'Abbott' districts. Instead, the state would offer subsidies to all districts with low-income students. The New Jersey School Board Association's Frank Belluscio says it's a step in the right direction.

BELLUSCIO: The impact of poverty on learning doesn't stop at the boundaries of the abbot districts. So having an at-risk-aid factor built into the formula is a very positive thing.

REPORTER: The plan needs to be approved by the state legislature.
