Feds Come Through with Major Funds for City Subway

The Second Avenue subway line gets a much-needed injection of federal money. The head of the Department of Transportation was in town to announce a $1.3 billion guarantee to help complete phase one. WNYC's Elaine Rivera has more.

REPORTEr: Preliminary work already has started on the Upper East Side for the first section of the long awaited subway line. New York elected officials gathered to celebrate the federal support, with Governor Eliot Spitzer saying mass transit expansion is vital especially now, with so much new construction in development.

SPITZER: The subway system is the veins the arteries the skeleton of the city. If we do not expand it, if we do not reinforce it, if we do not rebuild upon it, we will not have the growth that we want.

REPORTER: The project is expected to cost $4 billion... and eventually carry more than 200,000 riders daily from 63rd to 105th streets on Second Avenue. For WNYC, I'm Elaine Rivera.
