Giuliani Gets New Advice from the Right
New York, NY —
Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani has added eight new legal advisors to his campaign, from the conservative wing of the party. The move is part of a continuing effort to bolster the former mayor’s conservative credentials. WNYC's Elaine Rivera reports.
Candidates regularly announce endorsements, but Giuliani has also been publicly highlighting his circle of advisors. His “justice advisory committee” is comprised of a who’s-who of Republican attorneys and legal scholars.
The group includes former Solicitor Generals Ted Olson and Charles Fried and, until recently, newly appointed Attorney General Michael Mukasey. Giuliani widened the circle, adding eight more conservative legal advocates. Although he has pledged to support abortion rights, a common thread in the group is a desire to overturn Roe-v-Wade and outlaw abortion.
As mayor, however, Giuliani’s record was different. Abortion rights advocates have called his appointments at the time, quote, “moderate” and free of “litmus tests.” For WNYC, I’m Elaine Rivera.
