Guilty Verdict in Hate Crime Case
WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010
New York, NY —
A man who tried to fend off hate crimes charges by telling a jury that he, too, is gay, has been convicted of manslaughter as a hate crime for his role in the death of Michael Sandy.
Jurors deliberated for 4 days before convicting Anthony Fortunato in the death of Sandy, a gay, black man who was robbed and then chased into the path of a moving car on Brooklyn's Belt Parkway in October of 2006.
One other man has been convicted by a separate jury; a third is awaiting trial, and a fourth took a plea deal in exchange for his testimony.
