Bovis Criticized for Sloppy Work at Deutsche Bank Building

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

After the fatal fire at the former Deutsche Bank building, the FDNY fell under intense criticism. But, the investigation is also taking a closer look at the site's prime contractor.

Bovis Lend Lease is a publicly-traded multi-national based in Australia. In the last few years in New York, it has won some of the biggest and most prestigious jobs. Bovis built the Bloomberg Tower, the AOL Time Warner complex and is doing the Mets' new stadium. In lower Manhattan, it's running the PATH and MTA transportation hub makeovers.

And while its annual report says compliance is a core value at the Deutsche Bank site alone, it was cited no less than seven times since March for Department of Building violations, including an August citation for failure to move combustible material from the site.

After laying low last week, Bovis officials have agreed to meet with members of lower Manhattan's Community Board 1 which has been harshly critical of the Deutsche Bank project. A call to Bovis's press office was not returned.
