DA, AG Launch Criminal Investigations Into Blaze

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The deadly fire at the abandoned Deutsche Bank building has spawned a criminal investigation by Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau.

REPORTER: He says his Rackets Division has been in contact with fire marshals who found a section of the standpipe was missing. Mayor Bloomberg said investigators will look into whether the missing piece of standpipe contributed to the deaths of 2 firefighters.

BLOOMBERG: Nobody knows whether that was a contributing factor to the 2 tragic deaths or not - that is what an investigation is for - we are just not going to speculate.

REPORTER: The missing standpipe forced firefighters to use ropes to haul their water hoses to upper floors, where the fire was.
