Local Immigrant Groups Reject Senate-White House Deal

A bipartisan group of senators outlined a new plan to overhaul the nation’s immigration policies and President Bush says he would sign it. The proposal would give legal status to the millions of undocumented immigrants now living in the country but it still faces an uphill battle in Congress.

Chung-Wa Hong is the executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition. He says the deal is unacceptable partly having a guest worker program as outlined in the Senate plan will lead to what he calls a permanent underclass of workers.
