Protestors Gather at Atlantic Yards Demolition

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Crews are expected to start tearing down 9 buildings in Brooklyn today to make way for the massive Atlantic Yards project and some local residents and property owners are planning a protest. On Friday, a judge turned down a bid to hold off the demolition work.

The project's opponents had hoped to block the demolition until a May 3rd court hearing on a lawsuit they've filed to stop construction of Atlantic Yards.

The project includes a new arena for the New Jersey Nets, as well as office space, a hotel and 6400 apartments. Opponents say the project will destroy neighborhoods and create a traffic nightmare. Supporters say it will create jobs and housing.
