East Harlem Building Collapse

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

A 5-story building in East Harlem under construction partially collapsed yesterday and there are still subway disruptions. The MTA says to expect extensive delays and crowding on the 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 lines this morning due to the collapse of a 5-story building near 115th Street and Lexington Avenue yesterday.

Bronx-bound 4 and 5 trains are running local this morning from Bowling Green to the 86th Street station. Bronx-bound 6 trains are suspended from 86th to 125th streets. Manhattan-bound 6 trains will skip 116th street.

At that building collapse, a dozen construction workers managed to escape while 1 worker sustained minor injuries. Department of Buildings officials, who recently had issued permits for general interior work, ordered the owner to immediately demolish the rest of the building. Crews are working to demolish the structure. A building department spokeswoman said preliminary reports indicate construction work led to the collapse. Three nearby buildings were evacuated as a precaution.
