NJ Lawmakers Expand Support for Military Personnel

A package of bills to expand benefits and protections for military personnel and veterans in New Jersey has cleared another Legislative hurdle.

Among the measures advanced by the Assembly yesterday was one that would require the state to send National Guard members called to active duty information on help available to families and contact information for the relevant Judge Advocate General's office. Another would bar public employers from laying off an employee on military leave.

Employers also would have to place employees returning from duty in a similar position or an available position requested by the employee if a former job is no longer available. The bills still need Senate consideration and approval from Governor Corzine.
