Schumer Calls for Prescription Regulations

An upstate New York prosecutor blames America's "culture of competitiveness" for the demand for illegal steroids. Albany County District Attorney David says the culture of competitive sports - at the professional and high school level - is helping to fuel the dangerous use of performance-enhancing drugs.

He spoke yesterday in New York City, where Senator Charles Schumer announced he would seek new federal laws to crack down on steroids. Nine people have been arrested in 3 states in a probe led by Sores. As many as 24 could ultimately face charges. Schumer says he would introduce new legislation that would outlaw the bad-faith sale of prescriptions.

He also wants to make human growth hormone, believed to be one of the most popular new steroids an illegal controlled substance.
