Drunk Driver Sentencing Today

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

It's sentencing day today for 25-year-old Martin Heidgen. He's the insurance salesman who was convicted of murder for driving drunk in his pickup truck and hitting a wedding limousine head on. The limo driver and a 7-year-old flower girl were killed in the crash back in July 2005.

The Nassau District Attorney took the unusual route of charging Heidgen with murder. Defense Attorney Stephen Lamagna argued that his client should be held responsible for the fatal crash, but the accident didn't rise to the level of murder. Heidgen faces 25 years to life in prison, when he's sentenced today in Nassau County Court.
