Several Seek Comptroller Job

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Several candidates -- many of them state lawmakers -- are seeking the state comptroller's job left vacant after Alan Hevesi's resignation last week.

That's according to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, the Manhattan Democrat who will play a major role in selecting the state's chief financial officer. Silver says his office has been contacted by several longtime Assembly members about the comptroller's job. They include Richard Brodsky of Westchester County, Thomas DiNapoli of Nassau County, Joseph Morelle of Rochester and Pete Grannis of New York City.

Silver has also heard from comptrollers from Nassau County and Buffalo, among others.

Under state law, the Legislature gets to choose Hevesi's replacement. With Democrats outnumbering Republicans overall in the Legislature, it's likely a Democrat will be chosen.
