Club Owners Fear New Rules Could Hurt Business
New York, NY —
A group of nightclub owners told city council members that proposed rules for improving security could chase business away.
REPORTER: David Rabin is the owner of the club Lotus and president of the New York Nightlife Association. He says a crackdown on clubs that report violent crimes may keep owners from reporting disorderly conduct to the police, defeating the whole purpose of new rules.
RABIN: I'm not sure if this keeps up in all honesty that we will continue to have the best night life in the world in New York City.
REPORTER: Police testified at a hearing that they like the idea of tighter club security but they also said clubs can be magnets for crime. In the last week alone, police said there were two homicides, three people stabbed and another person shot at clubs.
