Spitzer and Faso Face Off in First Debate

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

The two gubernatorial candidates clashed over gay marriage during last night's debate. Democratic nominee Eliot Spitzer said he supports it; his Republican opponent John Faso said he's against it.

REPORTER: The two candidates were at the opposite ends of the spectrum when came to whether gay couples should be allowed to legally marry. Faso was blunt.

FASO: I think it's a testament to Mr. Spitzer's certainty on all of these types of issues that he says on say one he's going to force gay marriage down the throats of many New Yorkers.

Spitzer jabbed back - mischievously - and explained why he supports gay marriage.

SPITZER: I'm not going to start ranking priorities A,B, and C but let me respond to John without commenting on his use of metaphors, I believe in equality before the law.

REPORTER: A second debate will be held next month in Buffalo.
