Relief-Seekers Crowd City Pools

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

On the third day of the heat wave, New Yorkers trying to escape the torrid weather packed into the pool at Thomas Jefferson Park in East Harlem. Outside the pool, 3 members of the city's summer youth employment program sat guarding a garden hose from theft.

One of them, Josie Sahada noted that the heat was making tempers rise.

SAHADA: Its getting a lot more hectic, more violence going on, the pool is getting like out of control, people getting arrested and stuff. I guess the heat is affecting everyone and everyone wants to come in, have fun, act all crazy and you know people are just taking advantage.

REPORTER: No attempted hose thefts were reported.
