Building Worker Contract Approved

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

Owners of more that three thousand residential buildings in the city approved the contract deal hammered out with workers early this morning after negotiations went past the midnight strike deadline.

REPORTER: Now its up to the 28-thousand doormen porters and other building workers to approve the deal. 32B-J spokesman Matt Nerzig says he's confident they will ratify the contract in about 3 weeks.

NERZIG: they knew what we were bargaining for they knew what our position was they helped formulate that position we came away with no wage freeze we came away with health care so we have every reason to think it will be ratified easily.

REPORTER: Workers get an 8 and 1/4 percent increase over 4 years, but their raises don't kick in until october, which gives owners the half year pay freeze they wanted. Workers will still not have to contribute to health care costs, something the union had demanded. And they get to keep their pensions instead of switching to 401-ks.
