Dramatic 911 Tapes Underline Confusion on Morning of September 11th

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

New York City officials released some 9 hours of dramatic audio tape today from the 911 operator system from the morning of September 11th, 2001.

The voices heard are from the operators and dispatchers who were fielding telephone calls from people trapped inside the World Trade Center before the towers collapsed.

The tapes do not include the voices of the callers. They have been bleeped out since an appeals court ruled that the victims’ families would need to give permission to have them released.

WNYC’s Richard Hake reports on the confusion and the lack of information among the operators.
