NJ Election Update

Jersey City's mayor wins in a landslide, there's a runoff in Hoboken and tragedy strikes the Hackensack city council election. WNYC'S Bob Hennelly has more on New Jersey's nonpartisan municipal elections.

Jersey City's incumbent Mayor Jeremiah Healy racked up three quarters of all the votes cast, avoiding a run-off required in any race where one candidate doesn't get more than 50 percent of the vote. The former prosecutor and local judge prevailed in a bitter special election last year after the sudden death of Mayor Glen Cunningham. There *will* be a runoff in Hoboken's election for mayor. The June 28 election will pit incumbent David Roberts … who got about a third of the votes in a field of five candidates … against runner-up Carol Marsh … a Councilwoman who got 29 percent of the vote. In Hackensack, the City Council elections turned into a posthumus tribute for council hopeful Joesph DeFalco, a public high school principal, who died of a heart attack just two hours after the polls opened. Now it will be up to the City Council to pick someone to fill the seat. For WNYC I am Bob Hennelly
