DC Cops in NYC to Recruit Hispanics
New York, NY —
The Washington D.C. police department to diversify its ranks and as part of its effort to do that it's come to New York to recruit hispanics.
Recruiters say in the 1990's, Washington's hispanic population grew faster than any other metropolitan area in the United States. But, out of the 38-hundred officers on D.C.'s police force, only about 6 percent are hispanic.
Recruiters say they tell potential candidates working in D.C. is better than working for the NYPD because there is unlimited overtime, no tolls or state taxes and salaries are higher.
Sergeant Kelvin Cusick says Cusick says about 100 New Yorkers took Washington's police recruit test and that about half were current members of the NYPD.
CUSICK: We've been pretty successful here in new york so we will be back here again to recruit.
Officials at One Police Plaza are not concerned about the competition. An NYPD spokesman says hispanics are joining up in record numbers and like the Italians and Irish before them they often encourage family members to do the same.
