NYC Children Fare Well in New Report

WNYC News | Jul 12, 2010

New York City children are healthier and less likely to be victims of abuse and neglect that's according to a report by a child advocacy group. But as WNYC's Cindy Rodriguez reports, not all communities are thriving.

Infant mortality rates are down, teen violent deaths are down, and so are juvenile arrests. But according to an analysis of government data, latino children are more likely to be poor and to drop out of school and more black children are more likely to be born with low birth weights. Gail Nayowith is Executive Director of The Citizens Committee for Children.

NAYOWITHWE: we have to try to help parents earn more money and keep more of what they earn. We also have to figure out how to target resources better to neighborhoods where kids are not doing well.

Nayowith credits the state run health care program called Child Health Plus for insuring thousands of kids. She says hospitalization rates for asthma are lower and more children are getting immunized. For WNYC: I'm Cindy Rodriguez
