Weiner Donations Under Scrutiny
New York, NY —
Even before Mayoral hopeful Congressman Anthony Weiner officially enters the race, questions about his war chest have him double checking some sources of his campaign cash.
Under scrutiny are dozens of money orders reportedly turned in by a long time backer of Congressman Weiner and attributed to individuals who told the New York Times they had no knowledge of the contributions. A spokesman for the Congressman said Weiner is vetting the $1.6 million dollars donated to his campaign and will return any problematic donations.
The Campaign Finance Board would not comment specifically on the matter but confirmed money orders can be problematic because they can mask the identity of their source. In 2003 the Manhattan District Attorney's office convicted a former city councilman of accepting thousands of dollars in money order contributions attributed to individuals who had never given to his campaign.
