Whether You're For or Against Park51, Ditch the Signs, Wave a Flag

Regardless of one's politics, among the most arresting images from the whole Park51 furor was the sign that proclaimed "SHARIA." Waved about by many opponents of Park51, its dripping, blood red letters made clear that for some, this controversy has little to do with real estate or proximity to Ground Zero. The larger fear is that radical Islam is plotting a stealth invasion of this country.

But this time, signs are a no-no.

Last week, Pam Geller and Robert Spencer, two of the primary opponents of Park51, sent out this note about the big rally planned for 9/11:

Robert and I respectfully request that those of you who will be attending our protest against the Ground Zero mega mosque bring American flags, not signs. 9 x 12 (inches) sized flags. Nothing with big poles: the NYPD won't allow big poles. Please get the word out now.

We are asking that we all respect and honor that day with the flags, states flags, flags of other countries.. lots of flags...PLEASE don't bring signs. Nothing politically aggressive on a day of mourning. It is a solemn day. No signs. FLAGS. Tens of thousands of flags.

It's possible that the organizers are also responding to fears, expressed by some 9/11 families who also oppose Park51, that the protest will look bad, given that it's being held on 9/11. Signs expressing a particularly incendiary opposition to Islam, or immigrants in general, could backfire against organizers.

It just so happens that opponents aren't the only ones who are avoiding signs. Supporters are, too. This is from the website of New York Neighbors for American Values, the coalition that recently came together:

Please bring candles and American flags, but no signs. We are gathering in peaceful, respectful remembrance and unity. Our program will include music and words of wisdom from faith leaders and elected officials. Please wear white in solidarity and peace.

According to the NYPD, at least five groups have applied for sound permits for Park51-related rallies. Those rallies include the International Action Center (pro), as well as this one planned by Elijah Ministries (against):
