An entire generation of New York City jazz musicians sprung out of the everchanging rosters of the Lounge Lizards, John Lurie’s fabled group that innovated “third-stream” jazz in the early '80s by freely mixing adventurous, hard jazz with elements of pop, rock, and world music. The Jazz Passengers, founded by saxophonist Roy Nathanson and trombonist Curtis Fowlkes, are one of the most illustrious projects which evolved out of that scene. Tonight, the band reunites at the Jazz Standard, celebrating its first release in twelve years, with special guests Marc Ribot and Debbie Harry, among others. The Blondie frontwoman appears on this 1994 recording “Dog in Sand,” a perfect example of the Passengers’ brand of avant-pop.
