'Children Under Fire,' 'Moffie,' Full Bio: Mike Nichols, 'SafeWalks NYC'

All Of It with Alison Stewart | Apr 7, 2021

After the recent mass shootings in Atlanta, Georgia, Boulder, Colorado, and Orange County, California, the latter of which resulted in the death of a 9-year-old boy, the threat of gun violence is a concern for many Americans as businesses and schools reopen. Pulitzer Prize finalist John Woodrow Cox joins us to discuss his new book on how gun violence specifically affects children, Children Under Fire: An American Crisis.

A new film tells a story of racism, militarization, and homophobia in apartheid-era South Africa. “Moffie” follows Nicholas Van der Swart, a young white man who has begun his two years of compulsory military service and has struck up a romance with a fellow recruit in the process. Director Oliver Hermanus and actor Kai Luke Brummer, who stars as Nicholas, join us to discuss the film, which premieres on April 9 in select theaters and on VOD.

In today's installment of our Full Bio series, we explore Mike Nichols' work as a film director, including his 1996 film directorial debut "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf" starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. We also discuss "The Graduate," "Silkwood" and "Angels in America." Mark Harris is the author of Mike Nichols: A Life

In response to the rise in attacks against Asian-Americans, an initiative called SafeWalks NYC was created to offer a walking companion to those in the community who felt unsafe going to subways. Chinatown lead coordinator Amber Park and volunteer chaperone Annie Wang join us to talk about the group's mission and their experiences.
