
Yola's New Album, Allison Russell's 'Outside Child,' Angela Merkel's Legacy, A Book of Photos Documenting American Upheaval
In 2019, the Nashville-based British musician Yola emerged as a new voice of country and Americana with her debut album, Walk Through Fire. This year, she followed it up with her new album, Stand for Myself, stretching into funk, disco, soul, gospel and more. Yola joins us for a Listening Party.
Canadian roots musician Allison Russell has been a member of several bands, including Po’ Girls, Birds of Chicago, and Our Native Daughters alongside Rhiannon Giddens, Amythyst Kiah, and Leyla McCalla. Earlier this year, she released her debut solo album, Outside Child, an autobiographical record of childhood abuse and survival. Russell comes on for a Listening Party.
Angela Merkel, one of the most powerful women in the world, has been the Chancellor of Germany since 2005. At the end of the year, she will leave office, placing German leadership in new hands. 2020 was a year of upheaval. Photographer Philip Montgomery was there to capture it all on film, from Black Lives Matter protests, to hospitals full of COVID-19 patients, to portraits of those struggling with opiate addiction.
