'The Girl Before,' Modern Stoicism, 'Full Bio': Sylvia Plath, New Album from Big Thief

All Of It with Alison Stewart | Feb 10, 2022

Actor David Oyelowo joins us to discuss his latest role in the HBO Max miniseries, "The Girl Before," which tells the story of a woman who falls for a mysterious architect (Oyelowo) and becomes suspicious of him when she learns another woman has died in his house. Oyelowo will also tell us a bit about his upcoming projects, and his directorial debut, 2020's "The Water Man." "The Girl Before" premieres on HBO Max tonight.

Stoicism, an ancient Greek idea of enduring suffering without displaying much emotion or a lack of control, is having a bit of a renaissance. Since the beginning of the pandemic in 2020, books on how to be a Stoic have skyrocketed in sales, and more and more people seem to be turning to the old philosophy to deal with the current difficulties we're facing. Ryan Holiday, author and host of the podcast, The Daily Stoic, has written extensively about the history and principles of Stoicism, and he's with us to take your calls on whether or not you yourself have been turned onto Stoicism, and why.

For the February installment of our "Full Bio" series, we take a look at the life and career of the poet Sylvia Plath with Heather Clark, author of the Pulitzer Prize-nominated book, Red Comet: The Short Life and Blazing Art of Sylvia Plath. Today, we speak about her career as a poet and writer, as well as her marriage and family.

One of 2022's most anticipated albums is Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You, from the Brooklyn-born indie folk band Big Thief. The double album's twenty tracks were pared down from over forty songs recorded over four different sessions. Guitarist Buck Meek, who released the well-received solo debut Two Saviors last year, joins us for a Listening Party Preview, ahead of the album's release tomorrow, February 11.
