Frank Ocean's Channel Orange Turns 10, Summer Music Review/Preview, How to Make Snackable Bakes, WNYC's Birthday, 'Cult Classic,' A New Novel About Past Loves
This Sunday, July 10, is the tenth anniversary of Frank Ocean's debut studio album, channel ORANGE. The Grammy award-winning album can be found on many lists recapping the best projects of the 2010's and is highly influential in modern R&B today, on top of Ocean also being a popular, yet simultaneously mysterious celebrity figure. With us to talk about the music on the album, its initial popularity, and how its influence can continue to be seen today, is Jason King, chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music at NYU, and Ryan Dombal, features editor for Pitchfork who wrote the review of channel ORANGE back in 2012. Plus, we take your calls.
Believe it or not, 2022 is already more than halfway over. As a result, many are reflecting on the best albums that have already been released this year, what sounds and trends have been popular, as well as look forward to what projects we should expect to hear throughout the rest of the year. Plus, as we reach the peak of the heat of summer, everyone's clamoring for that summer anthem you hear everywhere you go. Joining us for a music Review/Preview is WNYC's own John Schaefer.
The summer is in full swing, and chances are you're attending or hosting parties with family and friends and you'll want to do some baking. Jessie Sheehan, recipe developer and author of the cookbook, Snackable Bakes: 100 Easy-Peasy Recipes for Exceptionally Scrumptious Sweets and Treats, is here to help. Sheehan joins us to share some easy recipes for baking small bite-sized treats that are great for entertaining, and take your calls.
A new novel tells the story of a woman who keeps running into her ex boyfriends on the streets of Chinatown. Newly engaged, our protagonist suspects that something bigger than coincidence is going on... and it might even involve some magic. Author Sloane Crosley joins us to discuss her latest novel, Cult Classic.
