
'American Eden': America's First Botanical Garden
Historian Victoria Johnson discusses her book American Eden: David Hosack, Botany, and Medicine in the Garden of the Early Republic. Johnson tells the story of Dr. David Hosack, Alexander Hamilton's family doctor, who was also a brilliant surgeon, pioneering thinker and world-class botanist. Hosack built the Republic’s first botanical garden in 1810, on twenty acres of Manhattan farmland.Â
On June 6 at 7 pm, Victoria Johnson will be interviewed by historian Maya Jasanoff at the New York Public Library's Cullman Center for Scholars & Writers (476 Fifth Avenue at 42nd St). The event is free and open to the public. RSVP is required.Â
