The Anbessa Orchestra is a Brooklyn band of Israeli musicians who play Ethiopian music inspired by American soul and European brass bands. But in the nightclubs and hotels of Addis Ababa in the early 1970s, this was the dance music of the day, marrying exotic Ethiopian scales with Western horns and a slinky groove. Anbessa Orchestra keeps that tradition alive and extends it with their own works in the Ethiopop style. Anbessa Orchestra plays Monday night, July 26 at the Brooklyn club Wild Birds.
