Antarctica: The Elephant in The Room at COP21

When it comes to the risks of climate change, Antarctica has been called a wild card—if all of its ice melted, there would be a catastrophic rise in sea level.

Just how likely is that worst-case scenario? A recent study published in the journal Nature Geoscience finds that unbridled carbon emissions could lead to widespread destabilization of Antarctic glaciers by the year 2100.

But at next week’s U.N. climate change talks in Paris, negotiators won’t be talking about this threat, as Heather Goldstone, science correspondent for WCAI and WGBH Radio, explains.
