Joining us for our national call-in are:

  • Alyson Martin, cofounder of Cannabis Wire and adjunct professor at Columbia Journalism School, breaks down the different business models of states that have legalized recreational cannabis, and looks at the pros and cons, Ben Markus, business reporter for Colorado Public Radio, joins to talk about how Colorado is fairing five years into legalization and Kayvan Khalatbari, co-founder and operations manager for Denver Relief Consulting, board member of the non-profit The Minority Cannabis Business Association, joins to talk about diversity in the legal pot industry.
  • Jacob Margolis, science reporter at KPCC, talks about how tax revenue was a big part of the push for legalization in California, and where the state is at two years into legal cannabis.
  • Mark Kleiman, professor of public policy at the NYU Marron Institute of Urban Management and at NYU Wagner and author of Marijuana Legalization: What Everyone Needs to Know (Oxford University, 2016), gives the national picture of how cannabis has impacted public health in states that have legalized recreational use.
  • Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, discusses the different ways legal states are dealing with prior cannabis-related criminal convictions, Twyla Carter, senior staff attorney at the ACLU's Criminal Law Reform Project, talks about the legal and civil rights implications of expungement. Then, George Gascón, District Attorney for San Francisco, will discuss San Francisco's expungement program, which L.A. and Chicago are using as a model for their own programs.
  • Lizzie Post, great-great-granddaughter of Emily Post, co-president of The Post Institute, and author of Higher Etiquette: A Guide to the World of Cannabis, from Dispensaries to Dinner Parties (Ten Speed Press, 2019), talks about how legal weed has changed how people interact with one another, and gives tips and John Kagia, chief knowledge officer at New Frontier Data, talks about some of the data about who consumes cannabis, and how they consume it.
  • Steve Carmody, Michigan Public Radio, Mina Kim, KQED News’ evening anchor and the Friday host of Forum, Kristian Foden-Vencil, reporter and producer for Oregon Public Broadcasting, and Paris Alston, associate producer for Radio Boston at WBUR, join to talk about legalization in their states.
