Music from Colombia has become a real global force in the last decade, but the pioneers who first brought Colombian music to a global audience are the members of Aterciopelados. For just over 30 years the band has been making music that combines rock and traditional South American rhythms, and while the name Aterciopelados means something “velvety” and soft, their lyrics often hit hard, with songs about cultural pride, women’s rights, and environmental issues. The band had their first big hit in 1995 with the song called “Bolero Falaz,” or “fake bolero.” The Colombian rock band Aterciopelados plays Aug. 29 at Brooklyn Paramount.
